The internship

Join our international internship in Knowledge Management on Valorisation of Brew Industry Co-Products and Residues! You’ll combine your passion for sustainability, engineering, and marketing to explore innovative pathways for converting brewery waste into valuable resources. Collaborate with experts, develop e-learning materials, and contribute to circular economy and Net Zero Carbon goals at HEINEKEN. This is your chance to make a real impact in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.

 

As an intern, your main responsibilities will include conducting comprehensive literature reviews on the valorisation of brewing industry waste, developing theoretical frameworks and models for waste conversion, and analysing existing case studies and technologies. You’ll propose innovative and sustainable solutions for waste valorisation—such as biotechnological applications, energy recovery, and material recycling—and compile your findings into a detailed report, e-learning materials, and good practices. Expect to collaborate closely with sustainability, engineering, and operational teams across Global HEINEKEN, as well as connect with an international network of interns and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

Our department is dedicated to advancing sustainability and circularity within the brewing industry by developing and sharing best practices for the valorisation of co-products and residues. We focus on innovative methods for converting waste streams—such as surplus yeast, spent grain, paper labels, and wastewater treatment plant sludge—into valuable resources, supporting HEINEKEN’s Net Zero Carbon and Healthy Watersheds ambitions. The main challenges we tackle include identifying the most effective valorisation pathways, integrating knowledge across international operations, and ensuring that environmental guidelines are both practical and impactful.

Our team is highly international and multidisciplinary, bringing together experts in environmental science, engineering, waste management, and knowledge management. Collaboration is at the heart of what we do, with interns working closely alongside experienced colleagues and fellow interns from around the world.   • Enrolment in a Master’s programme in Environmental Science, Waste Management, Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, or a related field.
  • Understanding and passion on waste management and sustainability principles.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and scientific writing skills.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional, multicultural team.
  • High motivation, adaptability.
  • Familiarity with the brewing industry is an advantage.

Conditions of HEINEKEN

  1. You are enrolled at an educational institution for the entire duration of your internship and can provide proof of enrollment for the current academic year during your onboarding.
    1. In the case of non-EU nationality, you must be registered as an intern with a Dutch educational institution.
    2. In case of EU nationality, you may also be registered as an intern at educational institutions outside the EU.
  2. You reside in the Netherlands for the entire duration of your internship. Please note that HEINEKEN does not provide housing.

 

Our Internship Conditions

During your time as an intern at HEINEKEN, you’ll work in a dynamic environment where growing and learning are at the heart of everything we do. Together, we brew your future step by step. In addition, we offer you:

 

  • A full-time internship, starting on February 1, 2026
  • The duration of the internship is 5 or 6 months (to be agreed upon with your internship supervisor)
  • Your home office will be located in Schiphol .
  • At HEINEKEN, we work with a hybrid model, typically spending three days a week at the office and two days working from home
  • You will receive a monthly internship allowance of €650 gross based on a 40-hour workweek
  • You will earn 2 vacation days per month (based on a full-time internship)
  • If you do not have a public transport student subscription, your commuting costs will be fully reimbursed
