Purpose of the Role

To learn and develop the traditional and technical skills of coopering under the guidance of experienced coopers within a three-year period. The Cooper Trainee will assist in the construction, repair, and maintenance of barrels and alternative wood products while ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of staves, hoops, and other barrel components.
  • Learn to use hand tools and machinery safely and effectively.
  • Support Coopers with barrel assembly, charring/toasting, and repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working area in line with workshop standards.
  • Participate in on-the-job training, workshops, and assessments.
  • Handle materials, barrels, and equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Observe and comply with health, safety, and quality standards always.
  • Actively participate in TPM activities
  • Comply with all instructions and training requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Physically fit and able to handle manual work (heavy lifting, bending, standing for long periods).
  • Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
  • Willingness and ability to learn a skilled trade through practical training within a 3-year period.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Punctuality and attendance reliability

Advantageous Experience/Knowledge

  • Prior exposure to woodworking, carpentry trades.
  • Experience with hand tools, planers, bandsaws, thicknesser and power tools.
  • Knowledge of workshop and/or factory safety.
  • Previous work experience in a manufacturing, winery, brewery, or agricultural environment.
