                                                             Automation Engineer: Sedibeng 

Applications are invited for the above-mentioned role based at Sedibeng. The successful incumbent will report to the Engineering Manager.

 

The key purpose of this role is to manage the Automation, Electrical, and Instrumentation & Control function within the brewery. This includes the management and direction of the automation, Electrical, instrumentation& Control team. While maintaining the entire site automation infrastructure and IT production equipment/software for reliable and efficient brewery operation into the future.

 

Safety, Health and Environment:

  • Ensure the Automation department operates within company SHE standards and OHS Act, through continued education and training and obtaining the co-operation and commitment of all staff to observe all safety rules, procedures and processes in order to drive zero accident mentality.
  • Ensure the brewery complies with ISO and HACCP standards for all critical instrumentation and that all necessary records are maintained, including all radioactive sources used for inspection equipment.

 

Compliance:

  • Ensure automation, Electrical and instrumentation systems operate safely and meet all legislative, and Heineken standards.
  • Ensure all Sedibeng Brewery automation, production electrical and IT Production systems comply with legal regulations, and Heineken rules, guidelines, standards, procedures, and instructions.
  • Maintain Automation and production electrical systems in a safe operational condition.
  • Maintain knowledge of latest legislative regulations and Heineken standards and ensure application at Sedibeng Brewery.
  • Define and implement Strategy for replacement of Automation and IT production equipment prior to end of life or support to minimize risk to the business.
  • Define and implement standards for field-based control and instrumentation equipment to support the sites automation strategy.
  • Develop the current control/software hierarchy across brewing and packaging to lever productivity and cost benefits.
  • Manage all Service level agreements with Automation, Electrical, instrumentation related vendors to optimise the value from all compliance/technical support and maintenance contracts and ensure equipment reliability. With the key vendor and contract being the Endress & Hauser Maintenance contract.
  • Full compliance to SANS 10142 standards and OHS act 85 of 1993 and all its regulations relating to Automation, Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls.

Process Improvement:

  • Co-ordinate improvement actions for process deviations, resulting from in process automation or computerization.
  • Responsible for the deployment of all automation, Electrical, instrumentation related losses and the launch of necessary improvement teams to reduce the loss impact on the business.
  • Set priorities for modification activities, in consultation with Departmental Managers and external executing parties.
  • Provide input into business and departmental strategies on new technologies and suggested changes for task automation and optimization.
  • Provide technical support to facilitate process optimization through modifying software and functional descriptions of process automation where required. 

 

Team Management and Development:

  • Drive the performance of Automation, Electrical, instrumentation & Control team to deliver on current and future business needs.
  • Develop and implement a long-term departmental strategy and vision for the Automation team that provides direction for the team and the business.
  • Manage the Automation team to deliver the high levels of performance required in such a highly automated environment through effective use of the Heineken PMS system.
  • Develop the team to ensure sufficient pipeline for the future and help improve their individual effectiveness and impact in the business.
  • Coach and Mentor, the Automation, Electrical, Instrumentation & Control Trainee to be able to fulfil the requirements for the business in terms of future needs in both technical and managerial skills.
  • Manage the relationship with other departments to ensure their business requirements are met and customers are satisfied.

 

   Automation Skill Development:

  • Assist Development of Sedibeng Brewery Staff in respect of automation systems.
  • To detect any training needs for artisans and operators in the use and maintenance of automation systems. 
  • Recommendation education and retraining of other Staff where necessary.
  • Facilitate development of training material that can be used on site to up skill people in Automation skills
  • Co-ordinate training programmes for new plant and installations in coordination with automation contract partners and external suppliers.
  • Ensure work instructions and documentation for automated systems are maintained and updated.
  • In conjunction with the Training and development manager, mentor and coach the engineering technicians and automation specialists to increase their competency in automation and control systems on site.
  • Promote staff awareness and compliance with relevant legislation.

 

Continuous Improvement:

  • Drive improvement processes and set priorities in order to develop, implement and maintain best in class standards and basic conditions.
  • Assist in the implementation of all new products and technology in the brewery in terms of automation requirements and support.
  • Benchmark brewery practices within the industry and Heineken Global to look for opportunities for improvement.

 

Cost Management:

  • Responsible for managing and optimizing all Automation, Electrical, Instrumentation related cost on site.
  • Responsible for Automation, Electrical, Instrumentation and controls related spares kept on site and ensuring that the correct spares are available, and the costs associated are minimized.
  • Act as project sponsor/owner’s representative on all Automation, Electrical, instrumentation related capital investment.

 

Plant Modification:

  • Ensure quality of automation modifications and automation of new construction projects
  • Evaluate modification proposals to ensure compliance with legislative and Heineken standards.
  • Evaluate designs for new installations to ensure compliance with legislative and Heineken standards.
  • Conduct acceptance testing and evaluation of automation systems after delivery of modifications or installation of new plant.
  • Assisting site based project engineers to ensure that any new projects/additions conform to the site standards and are fully integrated into existing mature control systems.
  • Develop all control room/equipment SCADA and HMI’s in line with Heineken standards.

 

Preventative Maintenance:

  • Manage preventative and planned maintenance programmes with external suppliers to ensure reliable operation of production automation, Electrical and instrumentation & Control and computerised systems.
  • To provide management information on Automation, Electrical, Instrumentation& Control breakdowns and work order progress via monthly reporting of breakdowns and stoppages.
  • In conjunction with contract automation, Electrical, Instrumentation partners ensure implementation of an effective preventative maintenance programme for all Brewery automation systems.
  • Co-ordinate the co-operation between Automation contract partners, external suppliers, and production. 
  • Facilitates the development of the Computerised Maintenance Management System to effectively maintain and manage assets.
  • Manage the specification, installation, maintenance and development of the site’s automation network, hardware architecture and automation software library.
  • Specifies the maintenance standards for instrumentation and control systems and monitor compliance.
  • Develop and implement a backup and disaster recovery strategy to ensure all automation and IT production systems can be recovered and ensure business continuity in case of a disaster.
  • Ensures the reliability and improves the data integrity of all automated data collection systems such as BCS and LIMS.
