The Gist

The Packaging Manager at Lagunitas manages all aspects of production planning and goal-setting with respect to assuring Safety, quality and productivity objectives of the Packaging Dept. The Packaging Manager will improve and promote a safety-first culture, handle all scheduling and work assignments for the bottling, kegging, and canning line staff, analyzes and researches packaging line operations ‘best practices’ to develop, recommend and implement efficient operational processes, while also implementing effective quality control checks to ensure packaging meets all regulatory requirements

 

What You’ll Do

Operations management

  • Responsible for the safety of all team members and required to audit area/tasks for safety compliance and work with EH&S manager to ensure compliance to company and OSHA policies.
  • Actively participate in safety meetings, audits, and good catch program.
  • Perform 5Why and accident investigation when needed.
  • Monitor “Good Catch” program to ensure that action is being taken to solve safety issues.
  • Provide department leaders, plant manager, and the leadership team with recommendations on complex operational issues.
  • Provides leaders with decision-making framework, analytic guidance, and business judgement to drive initiatives
  • Analyses complex process and business requirements to determine operational feasibility
  • Oversees the completion of projects including planning, assigning, monitoring, progress, and quality of work. 
  • Ensures achievement of project scope, budget, and timeline
  • Responsible to develop and deliver operational budget for department
  • Develops or approves recommendations to change systems, policies, and procedures and ensures timely and accurate implementation.
  • Supports and leads TPM efforts including 5S, 5 Why, DCS, Morning on the shop floor, problem solving Kaizens, and Autonomous Maintenance
  • Set/meet production goals/objectives relative to quality, labor cost/case, schedule attainment, operating efficiencies, yields, on-time shipping, order fulfillment accuracy, & labor utilization.
  • In collaboration with the Quality Group, manage quality of the product from the bright tank to the loading dock as well as the quality of the incoming packaging materials
  • Maintain or exceed company Sanitation Standards.
  • In collaboration with the Plant Manager, develop KPIs for the department.
  • Create systems for reporting KPIs both up and to the packaging team
  • Develop annual action plans to support the Lagunitas strategic plan
  • Build and lead crossfunctional team to deliver results as needed by the business
  • Implement effective communication plans both for daily operation, maintenance planning, & KPI reporting
  • Responsible for hiring/crewing for the department
  • Implement training program & promote/coach professional development.

 

Maintenance / Engineering Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Packaging Maintenance team and Packaging Maintenance Planner.
  • In collaboration with the Maintenance and Engineering Manager, plans for the effective management of all maintenance functions (including vendors/consultants) to support packaging operations and drive equipment reliability.
  • Provide technical and project management expertise to ensure successful completion of all capital initiatives in the department.
  • Coach teams on troubleshooting methods for solving technical problems.
  • Initiate capital projects leveraging technology to produce creative and breakthrough solutions to current manufacturing restrictions.
  • In collaboration with the Maintenance and Engineering Manager, implements preventative / predictive maintenance strategies focused on asset reliability with feedback system for corrective actions 
  • Implement Operator Driven Reliability tools
  • In collaboration with the Maintenance and Engineering Manager, determines critical assets and or parts and design contingencies for potential outages

 

Ensure quality Health and Safety program for the entire plant

  • Direct, develop, and implement packaging safety policies
  • Coordinates packaging area health and safety training
  • Works with other departments and work teams in implementing safety initiatives and projects; performs follow-up activities to ensure completion of open action items resulting from safety work orders, safety committee activity, and employee suggestions.
     

Budget Oversight / Purchasing

  • Participates in the budgeting process and manages departmental budget including; packaging materials, labor, and maintenance/repair

 

What We’re Lookin’ For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or equivalent
  • 5  year minimum experience in the management of a high speed carbonated beverage packaging operation (beer preferred)
  • Understanding of the principal unit operations of beer brewing and packaging
  • Capital project management experience
  • Strong knowledge of GMP’s and OSHA requirements
  • Results driven focus
  • Proven leadership experience - team building, coaching and motivation, change management, process management, managing vision, and impact and influence
  • Excellent communication skills – able to clearly articulate issues, opportunities, and risk when making decisions
  • Acts as a role model to influence, shape behaviors, and connect with people and teams
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to respond confidently and responsibly to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, etc.
  • Ability to effectively present information to senior leadership internally or externally
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, self- management and problem solving skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office

 

Key Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Plant Manager
  • Will often interact with Operations Team Leadership (including Quality, Maintenance, Brewing, Warehouse & distribution management) as well as Production Planner

 

Physical Stuff

  • Must be able to lift 35 lb. cases of beer, 55 lb. sacks of malt, 44 lb. boxes of hops and move 165 lb. kegs of beer
  • Travel: occasional travel required to our other breweries or industry events
  • Driver’s license (in appropriate state with acceptable insurance record)
  • Required to have reliable transportation
  • Must be able to work flexible shifts, as necessary, & holidays and weekends.
