Job Purpose:
The Technical Brewer is the brewery’s expert in brewing science, combining practical skills with scientific knowledge to ensure an efficient, consistent, and high-quality brewing process. From raw materials to the finished product, the Technical Brewer systematically drives the production of exceptional beer, optimizing every step of the brewing process. He/she is responsible for developing the technological and quality skills of the department staff, fostering active cooperation with suppliers, and leading the department’s technological and quality agenda to ensure higher quality of product and process output. Execute additional assignment given by his line manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Contributes to the execution of all the work and activities in the Brewing department (related to technology and quality) in accordance with HEINEKEN Safety, Food Safety and Sustainability standards.
- Ensures sustainable production environment, IMS [QMS, EMS, OSHMS, and including FSMS] to improve activities to reduce the environmental impact of the process.
- Developing, implementing, and maintaining SOPs for all brewing processes, in terms of safety (e.g. Equipment uses, chemical handling, and ATEX).
- Lead sustainability initiatives in the sections like COD, and zero waste landfills in brewhouses, energy and water consumption optimization activities.
- Leads technological and quality agenda in the department.
- Contributes to the implementation of quality systems and procedures and proposes possible improvements to colleagues and his / her leader. Implement Heineken quality standards.
- Identifies quality risks and proposes and develops local quality procedures and working instructions, in line with applicable quality regulations and the Heineken Rules, Standards, and Procedures.
- Structurally prevents quality issues in a specific brewing process by cooperating with internal and external parties/user departments.
- Ensures technological implementation/requirement of the recipes - OTIF
- APM step 5 and SPC (Statistical Process Control) implementation
- Facilitates task transfer from PQ to AM and makes sure QMS (Quality Management System) implementation is sustained, and compliance with process standards is achieved.
- Make sure the process control is maintained as per the Heineken standard in all sections.
- Defines the priorities and losses to be attacked. Initiates and implements the improvement of TPM activities in AM Brewing Pillar with the collaboration of PQ Quality Pillar) and supports the development of the new improved standards.
- Takes initiatives to improve the AM team in his / her area of responsibility. Cooperates with PQ Quality Pillar.
- Evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of tasks and identify improvement opportunities taking appropriate corrective or preventive action in the department.
- Actively involved in improvement team rollout based on deviations, business strategy implementation, and driving TPM for eradication of waste and loss.
- Update the Extract Loss Benchmark Model (EBM) to compare cost and efficiency performance with design capacity. Propose improvements through detailed end-to-end studies focusing on low cost, ease of operation, and no negative impact to meet standards.
- Innovate ways to utilize assets with minimal or no capital expenditure; aim to reduce processing times and improve overall process Improvement (OPI) in brewing, cellar, and filtration sections. This includes reducing headspace and occupation times, increasing filtration runs, and enhancing beer recovery performance (e.g., by yeast wash) and supports the development of the new improved standards (NPI); follow with mono brew trial.
- Reports any deviation from Brewing process standards for assigned area of responsibility. Looks for potential solutions and takes effective communication to a higher level.
- Reports any deviation from Heineken brewing process standards (for own area of responsibility).
- Follows/investigates potential improvements and makes effective communication to a higher level.
- Contributes to improvement activities of the analyses in his/her area of responsibility and takes appropriate corrective or preventative action.
- Actively contributes/leads execution of the implementation of NPIs within the Brewing department.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of AM activities and identify improvement opportunities (e.g. CILT time reduction) and cooperate with the PM/PQ/AM Utilities Pillars.
- Knows what the needed equipment is and their performance to fulfil the technological expectations.
- Identifies the root cause of the OOS and decides the necessary action to avoid its recurrence.
- Ensures workplace is at the required AM and 5S standards and is actively involved in AM / 5S teams.
- Ensures higher performance of analytical equipment in the department.
- Implements the brewery strategy by mobilizing and guiding people; Develops training materials, train and coach the people; systematically analyses and improves delivery of technological and quality of work by improving existing standards and technician skills of the department staff.
- Executes the agreed people plans and strategy; develops team members as per the brewery people development plan (e.g. Job Level Matrix, CAD).
- Collects the data about the Operators, give the inputs about the individual performance and Performs tasks assigned by the line manager.
- Trains and supports Operators, regarding technological issues and agenda in the department.
- Contributes to the take-over of responsibilities from PQ to AM Brewing in the department.
- Captures and evaluates performance data and proposes improvement actions.
- Drive the use of connected brewery (digital) tools.
- Systematically analyses and improves delivery of technological / quality work by improving existing standards and technician skills of the department staff.
- Trains and supports Operators, regarding technological issues and agenda in the department.
- Continuously monitor and analyse process data at the machine level to identify opportunities for brewing recipes and process enhancements.
- Proactively develops plans and manages resources to drive improvements in department and process performance.
- Ensures cost-efficient execution of the activities necessary to meet the output requirements by setting priorities.
- Supports the budgeting process and managing production schedules to meet demand forecasts and optimize brewing capacity.
- Planning and managing for the development of new products, and raw and auxiliary materials.
- Developing workflows ensuring smooth transitions between different stages of the brewing process (startups and shutdowns)
- Manages projects OTIF in which the members have the same interests (within their own and other departments).
- Collects & manages data & performance and leads communication (in terms of quality) with the suppliers.
- Assess the performance of raw and auxiliary materials for supplier performance management, adhering to raw material and C&D standards used in the departments and closely cooperates with suppliers on problem solving activities.
Job Requirements
Experience and Skills
- 3-5 years of beverage technological experience and managing of people.
Education
- University Degree or master’s degree in the below field and diploma from the Institute of Brewing & Distilling (IBD), which is a significant advantage.
- Area of study: Engineering and science (Chemistry, Biology, Food Science, Food Technology and Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering) and related fields
